![]() You play as Link, a young boy from Kokiri Forest who gets summoned by a talking tree to go on a journey to stop an evil force that is seeking to rule over the land of Hyrule. It is a pioneer of 3D gaming and cemented many staples of the action/adventure genre that are still being used today. ![]() ![]() Released in North America in 1998, Ocarina of Time was Zelda’s first foray into 3D gaming and, like Super Mario 64, Nintendo knocked it out of the park on the first try. This was the exact moment that gaming turned from a passive hobby into a lifelong passion. My whole concept of what gaming was capable of expanded in an instant. So, as Link stepped out into Kokiri Forest in a freely explorable 3D environment, my mind exploded with possibility. ![]() I didn’t have Nintendo Power and internet forums weren’t really a place for 6 year olds so I had never even heard of Zelda nor the fact that 3D games even existed. All I knew about games were that you moved left to right, maybe you shot or punched people, and you could jump. You see, up until this point, the only game’s I had ever played were 2D games like Mario, Super Star Wars, Street Fighter 2, and Milon’s Secret Castle. ![]() He booted up a new save file and I was instantly blown away. I went over to a friend’s house and he wanted to show me the new Zelda game he got. I vividly remember the first time I played The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. ![]()
